HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions 89-049 N.C.S. 02/21/1989~~SOlutl®n Nom. 89-49 ~.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California SUPPORTING AB-8 MOTORCYCLE HELMET BILL WHEREAS, in 1987 over 25,000 motorcyclists were injured and 744 were killed; and, WHEREAS, it is estimated the average hospital bill of an injured motorcyclist exceeds $17,000 and it has been said that California taxpayers are paying more than 80% of those costs; and, WHEREAS, in California motorcyclists represent 3% of all passenger vehicles, but are involved in 12% of injury accidents; and, WHEREAS, unhelmetted riders have more than 2.5 times the number of critical/fatal head injuries than helmetted riders experience; and, WHEREAS, mandatory helmet use would reduce motorcycle rider deaths and the severity of injuries sustained in motorcycle accidents. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of the City of Petaluma urges the California Legislature to pass AB-8 (Floyd - 53rd District) to modify the existing Vehicle Code to require motorcyclists to wear approved safety helmets.
