R<ESOLUTION ,OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PETALUMA SUPPORTING AN INCREASE IN THE MOTOR
VEHICLE.FUEL TAX TO BE LEVIED.AND'COLLECTED
BY THE STATE AND THE;REVENUE THEREFROM TO

WHEREAS, because of limited funds, this.City, along with p bctically

all other cities in the State„ has not been able to :provide a 'C. ty road system ito keep
,pace with the demands of modern private and comindrsc0 travel in and through this
;City; and
WHEREAS, tilt's City 'has for many years used general City funds for
the construction. and improv.ement'of roads to supplement funds derived from'the
'current motor vehicle fuel tax andl still ha's a street deficiency of great proportions;

and WHEREAS, t is the

i feeling of this Council. that the people;of'�this

State are as concerned.with the condition of the City ,roads leading to their homes

and places of business they are�with the network of State highways' and therefore

will be.willing to accept the tax proposed hereby on a state--wide basis; and
ir
WHEREAS, the state-wide motor vehicJ:e fuel tax is a fair and equi..
table tax because the payments are in .direct proportion to the benefits received as

measured by the use of highways, roads and streets; and
WHEREAS, this Council does not feel that a City option is equitable
or can.operate. fairly because such tax must be collected from inter-city travelers
AS well as local users;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Council does hereby
declare its support for an increase in the state-wide motor vehicle fuel tax, the pro-
seeds of which increase would be distributed between the cities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council would be willing as a
condition to receipt of additional funds from said increase to commit matching funds
from other revenue sources to its road program;

and regularly introduced and adopted by the Council of
the City'of Petaluma, on the 21st day of January ,
