RESOLUTION AMENDING CLASSIFICATION PLAN TO ESTABLISH
A NEW POSITION CLASSIFICATION OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS
ADMINISTRATOR AND DESIGNATING IT TO UNIT 9 (MID-MANAGEMENT)
BE IT RESOLVED that the Classification Plan and Compensation
Plan as originally adopted pursuant to Resolution No. 6118 N.C.S., as
amended, and the classification titles and specifications as adopted by
Resolution No. 7054 N.C.S., are hereby amended by establishing a
classification of Information Systems Administrator, (as attached hereto
and marked Exhibit "A" and made a part hereof).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this action is taken pursuant to
Personnel Code 2.04.020 and Personnel Rules and Regulations (Rule IV, Section 5)
for classifications included in the Competitive Service of the Personnel System,
that the notice of this action has been properly posted. and that the City
Manager recommends this action.
AND that the Resolution No. 86-164 N.C.S. is hereby amended to
include establishment of the classification of Information Systems Administrator
and assigning this classification to Unit 9 (Mid-management), effective
January 20, 1987, at a salary range of $2,384 - $3,300 per month.
Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.

' ~. • ~ Under executive :direction, to plan., :direct., supervise an'd' coordinate the
automated information s:ystern needs of all. City departments; to manage the
daily activities of the City's. data processing. ~ system; and.- to do .related' work
as required .
Examples of Duties
Confers with the City Manager on programs and policies related to
data/word processing and automated information systems;; advises the City
Manager on the current status and' .future. needs of ah departments for
automated information ~ systems; including Hardware; software, and.
personnel; manages the 'daily operations-~ of the. Ci`ty's data processing and
assists other departments on the ;daily management of various other
computer systems.; supervises systems operation. staff; coordinates all
' departments se of the data processing. and. other City computing systems to
maximize efficiency of Hardware;.. software,, and personnel; coordinates the
purchase and installation. of computer- equipment and .software., including
word- processn"g, in all City departments.; •acts ,as primary liaison between
the City and ha"rdwa"re/software vendors,• `manages vendor purchase., lease,
and service contracts;; p•rep,ares department annual report, program ~ of
service, and tentative b,ud`get; administers department budget.; coordinates
the data/wor.d processing needs and ses of all depar.finents; keeps all
departments informed as to what. information -and data .management tools are
.currently available for their .use;. assists department heads in determining
what. their automated. information management needs. are;. advises department
heads on personnel. training requirements; ~ coordin'ates training and cross
training of City personnel. on. computer systems; responds to requests for
-new reports or information -summaries by developing fhe computer programs
required or presenting a feasibility study on fulfi~I1'ing the .request.

Knowledge of automated systems environments, methods, procedures,
,praetic`es and' equp,merit: Ability to analyze "information:;. identify problems.,

.writing;, ,plan and coordinate work; maintain effective: working -relationships
with other user's; work. ,independently or under .gSSGLT supervision; work
modified shifts as assigned.
Must be able to successfully compl'ete• City of .Petaluma Police Department
background. investigation.
Education and Experience:
Equivalent of a BA witH major work in computer science, business or public
administration, or - related field. :Five. year-s incr:easingl'y responsible
experience with various government information systems irieiuding an
understandngg of the interrelationships and responsibilities of different City
departments : Working know-ledge of a variety, of" computer operating
systems and data base tructures, understanding of the requirements for
managing a mid-size. computer system.,: and knowledge' of the requirements
for interfacing var--ions computer systems.
