HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2008-109 N.C.S. 06/16/2008Resolution No. 2008-109 N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PETALUMA HONORING ROBERT "BOB" BLANCHARI), MAYOR OF SANTA ROSA HONORING BOB BLANCHARD,IVIA YOR OF ,SANTA RO,SA WHEREAS, Mayor Robert "Bob" Blanchard lost his valiant battle against cancer on Saturday, June 14, 2008; and, WHEREAS, Bob first served as an Army paratrooper before beginning his career in public service as a Riverside County Deputy Sheriff. He changed careers to follow his passion for teaching, and taught a variety of courses in criminal justice and political science at Riverside Community College while earning his Doctorate in government, and was named Director of the college's Administration of Justice Department as well as Director of the regional Criminal Justice Training and Education Center; and, WHEREAS, Bob and his family moved to Santa Rosa, where he first became the Assistant Dean of Santa Rosa Junior College's Liberal Arts Department, then Dean of the Occupational Department, followed by a return to teaching full time until he retired as a regular faculty member. He was also named Director of the public safety academy at the Los Guilucos center, influencing the training of a generation of peace officers in Northern California; and, WHEREAS, he served as a Santa Rosa Planning Commissioner from 1994-2002, and then as a member of the City Council for six years, including two years as Mayor; and, WHEREAS, Bob was known for his fiscal responsibility, sound land-use planning, and visionary mixed-use development, which helped transform Santa Rosa into the vibrant city it is today; and, Resolution No. 2008-109 N.C.S. Page WHEREAS, Bob's tenure in politics in Sonoma County was an honor and privilege for all to experience as all residents benefited from his enthusiasm, his passion for life, and his leadership as Mayor of Santa Rosa. He led by example, becoming a role model to all as a fair, honorable and enthusiastic leader who recognized the positive in people, conveying his message to his constituency in an articulate and polished manner, and solved problems through consensus and diplomacy. NOW, TIIEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Petaluma. honors Bob Blanchard for his commitment and years of dedicated public service. It was a privilege to work with Bob - we have learned from the best -and we know that his legacy will live. on forever in the values he has instilled in all of us. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and family for their loss. Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
