HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions 86-272 N.C.S. 10/06/1986Resolution No.86-272 N.C.s. of the City of Petaluma, California PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 6 - 13, 1986 AS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK WHEREAS, Domestic Violence has been recognized as a social problem in America where approximately 50% of all women will be beaten at some time in their lives and that 24 million women are estimated to have been severely beaten at least once by men they live with in intimate relationships . According to the Attorney General's Task Force Report, some violence is estimated to occur in fifty to sixty percent of all marriages, and, WHEREAS, if not detected and remedied, domestic violence tends to escalate in both frequency and severity, sometimes leading to homocide. It is pervasiveness indicates that wife abuse is not the personal trouble of a few maladjusted individuals, but a significant social and cultural problem, and, WHEREAS, it is estimated that over 6, 000 cases of domestic violence occur in Sonoma County each year, and, WHEREAS, the YWCA and the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women have worked for the past ten years in researching and implementing changes within the criminal justice system in order to assist battered women and their children, and, WHEREAS, through cooperation and support by city and community leaders, domestic violence cases and prevention efforts are better served by the YWCA Shelter. WHEREAS, the annual observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Week draws attention to the magnitude of the problem and what is being done to end it, and a joint effort of public officials, private agencies, and the community is needed to address this serious social problem., NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Petaluma. strongly supports the efforts of these groups and that they commend the foresight and commitment of the YWCA's Women's Shelter and the Commission on the Status of Women for taking the lead in improving the system's response to victims of domestic violence and for their work in the area of prevention and education about this serious subject matter, and that the week of October 6 - 13, 1986 be declared "DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS WEEK" . the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
