PETALUMA LEGHORNS-AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL DAY-OCTOBER 21,2013
Ilir WHEREAS,the Petaluma Leghorns—American Legion baseball team,managed by Casey Gilroy,
finished in first place in the 2013 Western Regional Tournament and advanced to play in the American
Legion Baseball World Series held in Shelby,North Carolina, August 16-20,2013; and
WHEREAS,the Leghoms qualified through the District Tournament held in Fairfield; won the
Area 1 Tournament held in Chico; won the State Tournament held in Yountville; and clinched the Western
1 Regional Championship held in Surprise,AZ, with an overall 14-4 playoff record; and
WHEREAS,there are more than 4,500 American Legion Baseball programs in the United States,
spanning all 50 States, with approximately 41 teams across California,that started the journey to the
American Legion Baseball World Series;and
'` WHEREAS,playing in the World Series in Shelby,North Carolina,the Leghorns lost their first
game against Louisiana;won the next games against Connecticut, Wisconsin,New Jersey, and Hawaii;then
lost the championship game to New Jersey, finishing in 2nd place in the American Legion World Series; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the games,the players participated in banquets and ceremonies,enjoyed
the hospitality of the City of Shelby and their host organization,the Shelby Rotary Club,and with the
support of the Petaluma community as well as the Petaluma Peace Officers Association,Petaluma Elks
Lodge 901,American Legion Post 28,McNears Salon&Dinning House,and Mary's Pizza Shack,the
Petaluma Leghorns received contributions to defray costs and hosted celebrations; and
WHEREAS,the Petaluma Leghorns Baseball Club was founded in 1999 and exemplifies the
mission of American Legion Baseball,which is to develop the qualities of citizenship,discipline,teamwork
and physical well-being in order to develop superior citizens as well as superior athletes,and as shown at the
World Series Tournament,this team displayed good sportsmanship, athletic ability and outstanding
preparation for academic achievement.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor David Glass,along with the members of
the City Council, proudly wish to congratulate the members of the 2013 Petaluma Leghorns—American
Legion Baseball Team for their outstanding accomplishments and "never give up"attitude, and declare
October 21,2013 as "Petaluma Leghorn—American Legion Baseball Day".
