PETALUMA MONTESSORI EDUCATION WEEK-FEBRUARY 23—MARCH 1,2014
WHEREAS, based on her observations of children and the manner by which they learn,
Dr. Maria Montessori developed an innovative philosophy of education in the early 1900's that
continues to influence learning across Petaluma; and
WHEREAS, a system for education for children from birth through the age of eighteen,
the Montessori program uses materials,techniques, and observations that support the students'
natural development; encourages their learning, independence, and self-confidence; and
advances the principles of peace through responsible citizenship; and
WHEREAS,the Montessori Method includes developmental teaching, one-to-one
lessons, and the promotion of respect among the children and peace to humankind; and
WHEREAS, countless children in Petaluma have benefited from our local Montessori
infant-toddler, preschools, and elementary programs; and
WHEREAS, a like-minded community of educators, families, and citizens have
expanded public educational options in Petaluma by ensuring that all children may have the
advantages of a Montessori education through the establishment of a public program, River
Montessori Charter School; and
WHEREAS,the City of Petaluma has assisted in this process by supporting grass roots
efforts to improve educational alternatives in the community, and honors the Montessori
philosophy of education for peace.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma,
along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby proclaim February 23 —March
1, 2014 as Petaluma Montessori Education Week in recognition of those who helped establish
River Montessori Charter School, and encourage all Petalumans to recognize the valuable
contribution made by Montessori schools to children in our City.
