HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2014-005 N.C.S. 01/06/2014 Resolution No. 2014-005 N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California AUTHORIZING AN APPLICATION TO SAN FRANCISCO BAY JOINT VENTURE SEEKING TO ENROLL CERTAIN CITY OF PETALUMA WETLANDS PROPERTIES IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY ESTUARY RAMSAR WETLANDS OF INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE WHEREAS, in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance convened and an international intergovernmental treaty was signed to support conservation of wetlands; and, WHEREAS, in 1987, the United States joined the treaty, known as the Ramsar Convention; and, WHEREAS, globally, more than 1850 wetlands comprising over 1.8 million square kilometers have been protected and received the designation of wetlands of international significance; and, WHEREAS, participation in the Ramsar Convention is non-regulatory and voluntary; and, WHEREAS, in 2013, the San Francisco Bay Estuary received the honor of inclusion in the Ramsar Convention; and, WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma owns several wetland.properties comprising northern tidal marsh and wetland areas of the San Francisco Bay, including Alman Marsh, Shollenberger Park, Gray's Tidal Marsh, the Hill Property, and Ellis Creek Wetlands; and, WHEREAS, members of the public, visitors to Petaluma, and over 600 students from local schools enjoy the City's wetland parks, marshes and creeks, wildlife, habitat under restoration, and respect the importance of wetlands to Petaluma's environment and the Petaluma River; and, Resolution No. 2014-005 N.C.S. Page 1 WHEREAS, the Petaluma wetlands and marshes support numerous federally threatened and endangered species as well as thousands of migratory birds annually; and, WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma desires to include ,wetland properties in the Ramsar designation; and, WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma recognizes the benefit of such a prestigious conservation designation to the economy, environment and community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Petaluma, on the 6th day of January, 2014, supported submission of the City's wetland properties to the San Francisco Bay Joint Venture.for inclusion in the Ramsar Convention. Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
