HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 10/06/20144- Cttp of VetaTuma Vrortamatiott FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: OCTOBER 5-11,2014 WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our City; and WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are where people are at the greatest risk of experiencing a fire; and WHEREAS, home fires kill approximately 2,500 people annually, and working smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire; and WHEREAS, three out of five residential fire deaths result from fires in homes without smoke alarms or with inoperable smoke alarms, and when smoke alarms fail to operate it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead; and WHEREAS, Petaluma residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, while hearing impaired residents should install smoke alarms and alert devices that meet their needs; and WHEREAS, the Petaluma Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires through prevention and education; and WHEREAS, the 2014 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!" effectively serves to remind us that working smoke alarms give us the early warning needed to safely exit our homes. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma, along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby proclaim October 5-11, 2014, as Fire Prevention Week and urge all residents of Petaluma to test their smoke alarms monthly ange the batteries twice annually. ra U
