FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: OCTOBER 5-11,2014
WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all
those living in and visiting our City; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and
homes are where people are at the greatest risk of experiencing a fire; and
WHEREAS, home fires kill approximately 2,500 people annually, and working smoke
alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire; and
WHEREAS, three out of five residential fire deaths result from fires in homes without
smoke alarms or with inoperable smoke alarms, and when smoke alarms fail to operate it is
usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead; and
WHEREAS, Petaluma residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room,
outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, while hearing impaired residents
should install smoke alarms and alert devices that meet their needs; and
WHEREAS, the Petaluma Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of
home fires through prevention and education; and
WHEREAS, the 2014 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Working Smoke Alarms Save
Lives: Test Yours Every Month!" effectively serves to remind us that working smoke alarms give
us the early warning needed to safely exit our homes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma,
along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby proclaim October 5-11, 2014,
as Fire Prevention Week and urge all residents of Petaluma to test their smoke alarms monthly
ange the batteries twice annually.
