RESOLUT.ION ESTABLISHING THE CLASSIFICATION, TITLE SPECIFI-
CAT,IONS AND SaLARY.'FOR THE POSITION OF POLICE OFFICER TRATNEE
AND ASSIGNING SAID POSITION TO UNIT 6, POLICE.
WHEREAS, the City Manager recomme'nds that a position of.Police
Officer Trainee be establ•ished for the Police Department; and,
NOW.,. THFREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED that~tlie:Classification Plan and
Compensation Plan~as originally adopted pursuant to Resolution No.
6118 N.C.S., as amended,. and the classification t;itles:arid-speci:fica-
tions as ado~ted by Resolution No. 7054~.N.C.S. are hereby amended by
establishing the classification specification~s for the position of
Pol,ice Officer Trainee, as set forth in ExhiUit A attached hereto and
made a part hereof, anci setting a monthly salary of $1313.00; and,

BE I.T FURTHER RESOL-VED•'that ~ this 'action is taken purstzant to
PersonneT ~Oode Seetion 3.04.020 of tlie Pet~.luma Niunicipal Code and
Personne'1 Rules and ~Regulat;idns (Ru•l,es IV and, V) , for classifications
included in the competiti've service o~f 'the `Persomnel. ~System, and that
notice of this ~action laas been ~properly po.sted; and,_ ~.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLUED that Resolution No. 7009 N.C.S., as amended,
include the position of Police.Officer Trainee in Unit 6, Police.
Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by' the Charter. of said City.

POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE
Definition
This is a non-sU~orn police trainee classification designed specifically
and so.lel.y for the purpose of employing police officer candidates in a
non-sworn status during the initial formalized basic police.officer
training. An employee shall be reclassified.to the ~iosition classification
of Police Officer effective upon successful completion of an approved P.O.S.T.
Basic Academy and approval of the Police Chief.
Distinquishing Character'istics
The.classif.ication. of Police Officer Trainee is.a recruiting and training
classitication Tor persons qualified~to learn the duties of a Police Officer
in the Police Department. Persons in this clas,sification undergo a formal,
comprehensive training program at a California~Peace Officer Standards and
Training (P..~.S.T.) approved Basic Academy.
Police Officer Trainees must successfully complete all academy courses
including academic classes, physical training, vehicle operaticn and
use of weapons in order to move to the classification of Police Officer.
Failure_in the trainee class to qualify for movement to the position of
Police Officer within the prescribed training period will be cause for termination.

Education a"nd Experience.: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school.
Receives instruction in the interpretation and appli,cation of the Penal Code,
Vehicle Code and ot.her laws affecting the protection of life and proPerty;
r~ceives instruction in basic criminal investic~ation processes and techniques
incluiding pol~ice ethics, uiitness in.terrogation, and collection of evidence;
participates in firearms training; receives classroom instruction in
enforcement psychology, enforcement tactics, effective writing, and effective
speaking; learns radio operations and methods of traffic, riot and crowd
Knowledges and Abiliti.es: Ability to learn law enforcement principles and
~ practices; ability to.read and understand departmental policies, instructions, ~
laws and regulations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt.a quick, ~
effective and reasona,ble course of action; to remember names, faces and
details of acci~dents;.ab'ility to understand and follow oral and written directions;
ability to learn the use and care of small firearms; ability to operate a vehicle
safely and accor.ding to traffic laws and rules; ability to speak and write
~ effectively; aptitude for law enforcement work.
