o ' Program (excerpted from 2008-09,Qnnual Report)
Overview of~~~Sonoma C unty,
j In Sonoma County„Safe`Routes ao Sch'ool became a countywide effort during the Annual Report period
of July 1, 2008, to tune 30, 2009. Starting in 2008, the Sonoma County Transportation Authority (SCTA)
allocated a small percentage of funds;from Measure M's Transportation Tax to support a countywide
SRTS program. The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition (SCBC) is implementing the countywide SRTS
program with funding of $45,000 per year for five years. However, there is community interest in
securing more substantial and ustainable monies to fully fund the countywide SRTS program.
Sonoma County Health Action identified SRTS as one of its. initiatives and supported convening the
N „ Couritywide SRTS Workgroup.~ The group started meeting in April 2009 to explore the development of a
sustainable and comprehensive countywide SRTS program.
The current countywide SRTS program has taken initial steps to provide resources to the: entire county
by setting up a website, wwwsonomasaferoutes.org; organizing.Walkand. Roll to School Day which
included 33 schools and over 3700 students throughout the county in October 2008; and providing
technics(assistance.
While efforts are underwayto expand the currentcountywide SRTS program, IocaI,SRTS pilot programs
at five schools. in Sebastopol and Santa Rosa experienced many successes. In addition, the Santa Rosa
City Schools began implementing activities under a SRTS program run by Santa Rosa Public Works. In
2008-09, the SRTS program made preliminary gains in changing attitudes and behaviors.
Overall, mode shift at the pilot schools changed slightly with increases in walking and decreases in
transportation in a family vehicle.
For more information about the 2008-09 Sonoma County Safe: Routes to School program, please read
the 2008-09 Annual Report. Included in the report is a Community involvement activities matrix for
SRTS activities at each of the participating schools in the county.
