HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2001-158 N.C.S. 08/20/2001 ReS®IlAt10I1 ~O. 2001-158N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California SiJPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT AND ADOPTION OF THE BAY AREA ALLIANCE DRAFT COMPACT FOR A SUSTAINABLE BAYAREA WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma's economy, environmental resources, cultural .amenities, educational institutions, and the diversity of the population make this .region a unique and special place; and WHEREAS, the entire Bay Area is undergoing rapid changes and facing serious challenges; and WHEREAS, traffic congestion; long commutes/overburdened transit systems; lack of sufficient housing and rising housing costs; loss of open space; declining neighborhoods; air and water pollution; and the increasing inequitable distribution of benefits of our thriving economy are interrelated problems that require integrated solutions; and WHEREAS, sustaining the region's environment and economy in a way that ensures equity for all residents requires innovative thinking and "e-visioning" - a balanced, integrated, inclusive collaborative approach; and WHEREAS, e-visioning is a. vision of the future that integrates the Three E's of Sustainable Development: prosperous economy, quality environment, and social equity. E- visioning is inclusive of all stakeholders and celebrates the region's diverse social, environmental and economic strengths; and xesomt~onN 2001-158 N.c.s. Page 1 of 2 WHEREAS, the Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Development is amulti-stakeholder coalition established in 1997 to develop and implement a sustainability action plan for the Bay Area; and W>FIEREAS, the Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Development defines sustainable development as the ability "to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs"; and WI-IEREAS, the overall goal of the. Bay Area Alliance Draft Compact is to reach consensus among a critical mass of stakeholder organizations and civic leaders regarding a new shared vision rooted in common values about how the region can grow in a more sustainable manner. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Petaluma City Council joins the overall goal of stakeholder organizations and civic leaders regarding a new shared local vision .rooted in common values about how the region can grow in a more sustainable manner. Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
