ll UNREINFORCED MASONRY BUILDINGS - STAFF UPDATE
Staff presented preliminary findings of the Unreinforced Masonry Buildings
Committee. Pursuant to Government Code 8875 et seq., there has been a
determination that approximately 700,000 square feet of unreinforced masonry
buildings have been found to need seismic stabilization. And, 490,000 square feet of
unreinforced masonry buildings are located within the Central Business District
project area.
Finance Officer David Spilman reviewed some possible financing alternatives. At
the present time there is no real estimate of the building rehabilitation costs, although
through a survey of 6 buildings, they estimate seismic related improvements to be
$16./square foot, for a total of $11.2 million in today's Dollars.
Members of the Commission discussed the benefits that would be derived by
including moderate income residential facilities on the second and third floors of
these buildings. A priority for occupancy would be: living and working in Petaluma.
It was noted that businesses may require a temporary move to alternate business sites
for the duration of their building rehabilitation projects.
The Unreinforced Masonry Building Committee expects to present its completed
report to the City Council in late October or early November.
ADJOURN The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.
