RESOLUTION AMENDING THE CLASSIFICATION PLAN
AND ESTABLISHING THE POSITION CLASSIFICATION
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTElVIS TECHNICIAN I / II
DESIGNATED TO UNIT 3 (CLERICAL /TECHNICAL)
BE IT RESOLVED that the Classification Plan and Compensation Plan, as originally
adopted pursuant to Resolution No. 90-209 N.C.S., and the classification titles and specifications
as adopted by Resolution No. 90-147 N.C.S., are hereby amended by establishing the
classification of Geographic Information Systems Technician I / II (as attached hereto and marked
Exhibit "A" and made a part hereof).
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this action is taken pursuant to Personnel Code
2.04.020 and Personnel Rules and Regulations (Rule IV, Section 5) for classifications included in
the Competitive Service of the .Personnel System, that the notice of this action has been properly
posted. and that the City Manager recommends this action.
NOW TB[EREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Resolution No. 90-147 N.C.S., as
amended, is hereby amended to include the classification of Geographic Information Systems
Technician I / II and assigning this classification to Unit 3 (Clerical /Technical), with a salary
range of
Geographic Information Systems Technician II: $20.50 - $21.53 - $22.61 - $23.74 - $24.92 per
hour;
Geographic Information Systems Technician I: $15.38 - $16.15 - $16.96 - $17.81 - $18.70 per
hour, effective July 10, 2000.

SUMMARY
Under the direction of the designated department or division,. collects, compiles, inputs and
analyzes GIS data utilizing.applcations, standards, and schedules developed by the. Geographic
Information Systems Division ofthe Department of General Plan Administration.
ESSENTI_aI. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be responsible for the creation and maintenance. of the department or division's
GIS data sources, utilizing applications, standard's, and schedules developed by the GIS division.
Duties and responsibilities will include those listed below. Other duties may be assigned.
® Collection and research of data (field studies, records reviews,. statistical analysis, etc.)
Compilation .and input of data into GIS and related app ications.
® Conduct GIS queries and analysis of departmental data sources in order to develop
decision-making tools critical to departmental and divisional needs.
® Creation of ~~aphical and tabular.output .such. as maps, charts, and reports for use in
project analysis, council presentation, public reference, etc.
o This position may also be responsible for other systems and data related.to the
department or dv.,sion's function, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD); desktop
pub:Ishing; mulf'i=media presentations and/or web page development.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Geographic Information System Technician I
.Associate of Arts degree (A. A.) from rivo-year college or university; or one to ttivo years' related
experience and/or trainn~; or equivalent combination of education and. experience.
Geo~raphYc Information System Technician II
Associate of Arks degree (A. A) from two-year college or university; or tvvo to four years' •
related experience and/or training;: or equivalent combination of:education and experience
(Bachelor's degree from afour-.year accredited college or university preferred). ~ "
Knowledge of GIS software, including. Autocad, Microsoft suite of products, ESRI Arc. suite of
products, Photoshop, Ilustrator,or similar graphic design software and web page development
software,. and GIS programming languages including Avenue, C, Visual Basic, Arc Macro
Language, Oracle and SQL Server or their current equivalent as identified.
LANGUAGE SHILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and. interpret common. scientific. and technical journals, financial reports,
and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers,
regulatory agencies, or members~of,the business community.
ivIATHElvIATICAL SILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of plane and solid .geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as
fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect, data, establish facts, and draw valid-conclusions. Ability to
~ interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal
with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES,. LICENSES; REGISTRATIONS
A valid California Class "C" Drivers' License is required.
