MINUTES
The December 10, 1979, minutes were approved as mailed.
Slide presentation by Helen Issel The Project Area Chairman showed
slides of landscaping of public areas in Petaluma and public areas
of other municipalities. She urged the PCDC to consider a more
varied and imaginative approach in planning and designing the public
walkways and rest areas in our city. The Commission also reviewed
a proposed tree planting scheme for the downtown area with considera-
tion being given to the planting of certain trees which currently
have been approved for front yard plantings but not for street plantings.
A new category of trees for planting in the downtown area was suggested.
These approved trees would be from an already approved list of front -
yard trees. The Commission urged staff (Superintendent of Public
Works, Roy Kelly)• to prepare a list of recommended trees that could
be planted in the downtown area within a reasonable period of time.
Such list should be referred to the City Council for approval.
Mahoney Parking Lot Assistant Director John Scharer reported that
revi.sed plans for the parking lot and drainage are now in the
Engineering Department for checking.
Pedestrian Bridge from the west side of Petaluma River to the Eagle
Shopping Center area. Commissioner Balshaw reported on a'meeting
of his subcommittee held earlier in the day. The committee felt the
pedestrian bridge would be a good idea if a parking lot could be
developed in the area bounded by Petaluma Blvd. North, Western Avenue,
Water Street an.d the present parking lot in the center of the block.
Initial contacts with necessary federal agencies will be made to
begin the paperwork to change the head of navigation from the most
northerly point (Washington Street bridge) to a site towards the
Old Petaluma Mill building.
