s BE IT RESOLVED that the Classification Plan and Compensation Plan, as
y originally adopted pursuant to Resolution No. 90-209 N.C.S., and the classification titles and
to specifications as adopted by Resolution No. 90-147 N.C.S., are hereby amended by
11 establishing the classification of Senior Animal Shelter Supervisor, (as attached hereto and
12 marked Exhibit "A" and made a part hereof).

14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this action is taken pursuant to Personnel
is Code 2.04.020 and Personnel Rules and Regulations (Rule IV, Section. 5) for classifications
16 included in the Competitive Service of the Personnel System, that the notice of this action has
17 been properly posted and that the City Manager recommends this action.

20 N.C.S., as amended, is hereby amended to include establishment of the classification of Senior
21 Animal Shelter Supervisor and assigning this classification to Unit 11 (Animal .Control
22 Services) effective May 17, 1999 with a salary range of $2079 to $2527"per.-,month:

DEFINITION
Under direction, responsible for the maintenance and operation of the City's Animal Shelter, to
.include, routine and erriergency field patrol services, shelter operations, medical, health care,
euthanasia services, administrative and support. services, assuring that established .basic care
standards are met for all animals. Supervises aril directs the work of the Shelter staff:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversees the daily operation of the City's' animal shelter program, 'including staff and volunteers.
To assure proper and humane handling of all animals through the Department, at all times, with.
attention to their comfort,, stress level and special needs. -Responsible .for the: welfare of shelter
animals 'and shelter records. Assists with front counter .operations; including adoptions and
customer service. Establish and ;promote a team approach with staff and direct weekly staff
meetings.
Perform. initial general health exam of'all animals admitted; identification and treatment of animals
requiring veterinary care. Administration of vaccines, sodium peritol7arbital and ace promozne.
Schedule spay/neuter surgeries with .participating- vets. Network with other shelters and rescue
organizations to ensure the placement of all adoptable animals. Work with Animal Services
. Manager and Shelter Vet in identifying and scheduling .euthanasia of shelter animals 'arid
participate in euthanasia when needed..
SUPERVISORY RESPONSI°BILI'TIES
Responsibilities include supervision of all. 'support staff and volunteers. Is responsible for the
overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of.'this unit. Carries. out supervisory responsibilities
in accordance with the organ'ization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include
interviewing .and training employees; planning, assigning, :and directing work; ..appraising. .
performance; rewarding and ~ disciplining - ernpfoyees;~ addressing complaints :and resoling'
,problems. ~
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION~ard/or EXPERIENCE
Sufficient. 'exper'ience and education to successfully perform the duties of the Animal Services
Supervisor.- Atypical way of .obtaining the required qualificafions is to possess two years of
experience iri aniriial shelter. administration, animal health care management or animal. hospital
office management; which includes supervision of staff. Related cohege course work desirable.

LANGUAGE SKILLS ,
Ability to read; analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals.. Ability to respond
to common inquiries or complaints from citizens, regulatory agencies, or members of the public
community. The :ability to understand dosage of such chemicals, but not limited to, Chlorine,
insecticides and Halothane .
1VIATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of plane and solid geometry.: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages,
ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ADILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to
interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal
with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATESLLICENSES
Possession. of a valid California Class C Driver's KLicense. Possession of valid certificates in
Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation P,enali~Code';832 required prior to successful
completion of the one year probationary period. : ~ ,
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee

Position. requires prolonged sitting, standing; walking; reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling,
bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires
grasping,. repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing statistical reports and data,
using a computer keyboard. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Hearing is required when providing
phone and counter service. The incumbent is frequently aroundanimals that are agitated or'injured
that may attempt to bite or scratch.
SPECIAL `REQIJIREIVIEIVTS
Work weekends, -holidays, nights, and rotating shifts; respond to emergency animal assignments
during off-duty. hours; wear a uniform.
