Dear Mayor Glass and Petaluma City. Council, I strongly encourage you to.appo.int Jason Davies as the seventh member of;the city council; and to amend the city charter to require that voting results are used as the, basis for seating new council members when vacancies are created by the outcome of elections. You must not abandon the fundamentals of our democratic system of government which is founded on the right of the public to choose their own representation.. The November election has given you indisputable proof of who the public wants on the city council. Dismissing the results of this election and selecting another person will only be viewed as a disingenuous and very political manipulation of the appointment process. To disregard the outcome off .the election is to reject the clear directive of the community, and will demonstrate contempt and disrespect for the sanctity of democratic process. It will only serve to discredit the city council and stigmatize the legitimacy of the new member. The appointment of Mr. Davies is the only solution that is consistent with the will of the voting public, has the support of the majority of the community, and cannot be portrayed as controversial or partisan. There is no justifiable rationale to select anyone else. Nor is there a valid reason to leave the seat vacant until another election is held: The residents of Petaluma are entitled to a complete 'city council that functions properly as a. seven -person body, and provides full representation of the community in a manner that fulfills the expectations and trust of the public. The electorate, has already done the work for you. The results of the November election have provided al clear indication of'w_h;o'the voters want to fill' the seventh chair. It would be reprehensible for the council to take any alternative 2adion on this matter. Thank you very much. Anthony Mills Petaluma, CA 94954 acmills161msn.com
