HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2008-175 N.C.S. 09/15/2008 Resolution No. 2008-175 N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 1420 (PADILLA/MIGDEN) REQUIRING NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION ON MENUS AND MENU BOARDS OF CHAIN RESTAURANTS WITH 15 OR MORE OUTLETS IN CALIFORNIA WHEREAS, obesity rates in adults have doubled over the last twenty years, and the percentage of seriously overweight children has tripled; and, WHEREAS, obesity is a major risk factor for many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes and some cancers; and, WHEREAS, since 1994, pursuant to the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA), food manufacturers have been required to provide nutritional information on nearly all packaged foods, with restaurants exempted; and., WHEREAS, recognizing the need for consumers to have information to make healthier choices when eating out, State Senators Alex Padilla and Carole Migden have introduced Senate Bill 1420 (SB 1420), which would require chain restaurants with 15 or more outlets in California to provide nutritional information per item on printed menus and menu boards; and, WHEREAS, the United States District Court recently ruled that New York City's menu labeling ordinance, similar to the provisions of SB 1420, is legal, appropriate, and in the public interest. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Petaluma does hereby support SB 1420 as an important step in giving consumers nutritional information needed to make healthier food choices. Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
