HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 04/21/2008 24 x a CHILDREN'S MEMORIAL DAY If WHEREAS, throughout America, tragic cases of violence against children are k occurring with increasing frequency and senselessness, destroying innocent lives and devastating families; and WHEREAS, the people of the City of Petaluma believe in the celebration of life, diversity, and hope for the future through our children, and deplore and condemn acts of violence comrnitted upon the children of our communities, and WHEREAS, the committee to Minimize Occurrences of Violence in Everyday Society (MOVES) and the Sonoma County Human Services Department are committed to raising individual and public consciousness of the need to care for all our children and to honor young lives lost during the month of April; and WHEREAS, the Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation is building the Children's Memorial Grove at Spring Lake Park dedicated to the memory of Sonoma County's children who have died of violence; and WHEREAS, MOVES has acquired a Children's Memorial Flag from the Child Welfare League of America, which has become a recognizable symbol of the need to do a better,job of protecting children, and which is sponsoring a national effort to memorialize child victims, and which has been adopted in other California communities. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED that in memory of children who have died by violence, the City of Petaluma does hereby proclahn the fourth Friday in April as "Children's Memorial Day and urge all citizens to increase their participation in efforts to prevent child abuse and child death. and to support the Children's Memorial Grove, therzby strengthening the communities- 1.4 which to live.
