WHEREAS, the Petaluma River is one of Petaluma's premier natural resources,
providing water for wildlife, recreation, and commercial uses; and
WHEREAS, the Petaluma Marsh is the largest unaltered tidal marsh on the west coast;
and
WHEREAS, the Petaluma River is known For its beauty, its commercial and recreational
amenities and attracts thousands of visitors to Petaluma each year; and
WHEREAS, efforts are now underway to restore and enhance this river and its wetlands;
and
WHEREAS. tons of trash. junk. and debris annually find their way into the Petaluma
River, its banks and its many tributaries, damaging the aesthetic, biological and commercial
qualities of the river and its watershed; and
WHEREAS, the Petaluma River Cleanup Committee has for 15 years, sponsored a river
cleanup effort each spring; and
WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma, local businesses, local service groups and numerous
environmental groups and volunteers will all donate time and materials to make this a successful
event.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT WILL BE RESOLVED that I, Pamela Torliatt, Mayor of
Petaluma, along with the members of the Petaluma City Council. do hereby declare May 211a
2009 as
"Petaluma River Cleanup Day"
