Cal -OSHA requires fire stations to provide appropriate diesel exhaust systems within fire stations to purge the diesel exhaust gases from the apparatus noon. Currently, the "exhaust systems" consist of large exhaust fans in the exterior walls of the buildings. These systems meet the code but still allow diesel exhaust to be expelled inside the building until the fans can flush out the fumes. The proposed system consists of an evacuation hose system that connects directly to the exhaust pipe of the apparatus. As the apparatus is started, the exhaust fumes are vented directly to the outside through a closed system. The system automatically disconnects from the apparatus as it moves forward. Air Exchange Inc. is a sole source provider for this type of exhaust system. P1, RESOLUTION TO PURCHASE DIESEL EXHAUST REMOVAL SYSTEMS FOR FIRE STATION 2 & 3 WHEREAS, diesel exhaust is a known carcinogen that causes cancer; and, WHEREAS, Cal -OSHA requires fire stations to provide appropriate diesel exhaust removal systems within fire stations to purge the diesel exhaust gases from the apparatus floor; and, WHEREAS, the proposed Diesel Exhaust Removal System consists of an evacuation hose system that connects directly to the exhaust pipe of the apparatus. As the apparatus is started, the exhaust fumes are vented directly to the outside through a closed system. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby authorizes the purchase of the Diesel Exhaust Removal Systems for Fire Stations 2 and 3.
