Subject: Highway 101 —East Washington Interchange
Dear Mr. Sartipi:
The East Washington Interchange is part of the larger Marin/Sonoma Narrows
project on Highway 101. The interchange ramps are sub -standard, cause
congestion on the mainline and are a safety concern. In 2004, it was determined
that the East Washington interchange improvements should be pulled out from the
larger Narrows project and accelerated as a stand-alone project. Since that time,
Caltrans, the City of Petaluma and SCTA have been working to fully fund the
project, and proceed with construction in 2006. The project will bring the on and
off ramps up to standard, widen them to accommodate future HOV ramps and
provide safe and controlled exit and entry to Hwy 101.

associated with the project. The SCTA and the City of Petaluma support transferring the IIP and
RIP funds programmed for the aux lane, to the interchange improvement project in the 2006
STIP. If the funds are not transferred, the interchange improvements will be delayed, costs will
increase and the local funds will be lost to other non -highway projects.
The City of Petaluma strongly supports the transfer of the aux lane funds to the interchange
improvement project.
Sincerely,
Michael A. Bierman
