P"ESICENt AND C IRMA RMA COROOYA Petaluma Community Center (320 North McDowell Blvd., Petaluma) CHARLES EVANS ��YYY� PURPOSE NOREEN EVANS A The Energy Vulnerability Summit will provide a forum for North Bay elected and JAKE MKENZIE STEVE RABINOWITSH appointed officials to explore the local implications of rising energy costs. Already, all 9 JUDY E GREG YOUNG YOUNG cities in Sonoma County and the county of Sonoma have committed to greenhouse gas reduction targets for their internal operations and communities. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels is a key component to meeting the reduction targets. This summit will provide additional information on the economic implications of our reliance on fossil fuels along with solutions that other communities are pursuing to diversify their energy portfolio and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The summit will also provide an opportunity for local officials to: • Imagine the challenges and opportunities that rising energy costs may bring to their local government and communities. • Share ideas and concerns with other policy makers. • Discuss public policy options that support their community's long-term economic viability. CONTENT The Energy Vulnerability Summit will provide an introduction to the main factors influencing energy costs and supply. The first keynote speaker is Richard Heinberg. Heinberg is a journalist and educator who has written extensively on ecological and energy issues. He is the author of several books on the topic, including The Party's Over: Oil. War, and the Fate of Industrial Societies and Powerdown: ODtions and Actions for a Post -Carbon World. Hemberg lives in Santa Rosa, California and is a core faculty member of New College of California, where he teaches courses on Energy and Society, and Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community. The second keynote speaker is Julian Darley, founder and director of Post Carbon Institute. He will share information on how other communities are preparing to diversify their local energy supplies through investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions. Finally, local leaders will have a unique opportunity to engage in small group discussions with one another to explore the concerns, challenges and opportunities that rising energy costs will bring to their communities. Registration will begin at 8:30 and the event is scheduled from 9:00 AM to 3:30PM. Lunch will be provided. COST: The event is priced at $30. in advance and $40. at the door.
