HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION-Non-Violencer 14"': LNNI/,4L SE.1 SON FOR NONVIOLENCE - JANI+, IR r' 30 -APRIL 4, 2011 WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma, the State of California, and our entire nation continues to confront the challenge of violence in the form of hate crimes, brutality, domestic abuse and other forms of itffiamanity; and WHEREAS, an awareness of nonviolent principles and practices is a powerful way to heal and transform our lives and communities, to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, and to promote peace and harmony among all people regardless of race, color, culture, class, language, faith, age, gender, sexual preference or other apparent difference; and WHEREAS, the principles and practices of nonviolence were epitomized in the lives and work of two international leaders, Mahatma Mohandas K. Gandhi and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther Kine Jr.; and WHEREAS, A Season for Nonviolence will kick-off and culminate with observances at the United Nations in New York City and observances in hundreds of cities and other locales around the globe, sponsoring projects and programs to create greater awareness and consciousness of the principles and practices of nonviolence; and WHEREAS, we in Sonoma County, have a great opportunity to focus the hearts and minds of our citizens on nonviolence in recognition and celebration of A Season for Nonviolence. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mayor David Glass, along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby proclaim the period from January 30, 2011, through April 4, 2011 as "A Season for Nonviolence" in Petaluma and encourage all citizens to support programs and projects that are conducted in the spirit of nonviolence. } t r
