Regular meeting of the Council of the City of Petaluma called to order
by Councilman Walter Brown, Vice President of the City Council.

Weed, Abatement ® Hearing of Protests
This being the time. and place set for hearing of protests re abatement
of weeds, the Clerk announced that one written protest had been received.' Th e e
letter of protest dated May 1, 1,957, and signed by Thelma H.. Beard, - M64
E. Lincoln Ave. Sacramento, wa's then read and filed.
There being no verbal protests Voided, Mrs.. Beard's letter was referred
to the Director of Public- Works, who was directed to contact the tenants and
determine it they Would take care of the weeds,, as requested by Mrs.- _Beard.
The City Clerk was directed to reply to Mrs, Beard letter, informing her
of the Council' action, and

City, as recomrr ended.by the Committee studying this matter, Wa r°edd b the

Mr.. Tom Cooper and. Mr. John Sturm, owners of the Petaluma. Taxi.
Service, addressed Council stating that they did 'not feel the :rates outlined
in the resolution were high.enough to eompehsat;e for the it cr'e.ased•price: of {
gasoline, tires etc
Following .a lengthy .discussion on the subject of rates Acting,.Mayor
Brown informed Mr. Cooper' and Mr'. Sturm than x e Committee had. arr i d `
at the rates set forth in the J:esolution after considerable study of the taxi " 'cab
rates of other nearby cities, etc. and that the Committee felt these rates
would be fain for the cab owners and their customers. He went on to say .,'that
he .believed the cabs should operate under these rates for , a month or so,
and them if they can furnish f,-igures to •justify a raise in the rates, the Council

CONSIDERATION OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS
At the request of Councilman Gustafson, the C Iy, - Manager was directed,
to obtain prices on traffic signals which may be manually operated by pedestrians,.
and. to check with various cities where such signals are` in use to determine if
they have proved' to be satisfactory, etc.
The matter' was referred ' to th City Manag ;and Chief of Police for
their investigation of tho subject and report to the Council.
Councilman Cr nella stated that he had been contacted by residents of
Edith St. and 'requested to inquire as to whether -it would - be possible for the
property owners on the North .side of said street', between.. Wash. St and "D'! - St. ,
to pay . for their sidewalks o'er a perl:od of time rather than in a. .lump Y

City Engineer Russell Ingram sta ted that this would be possible b
format .on of a small as*sessm.ent district, but the costs would be a little more''
that way.
The City Engineer was directed to check on this matter. ~

A Following a discussion relative to installation of a concrete sidewalk
down ,Fayra:n Street and. up East Washington Street to the Fairgrounds, the City
Engineer wa:s directed to prepare an estimate of the cost of such a. sidewalk.
Councilman Bigelow suggested that some sort of sign be erected at the
tq off: a,nto the Petaluma entrance on the south side of town° He remarked.
t as the ;sign which is now there does not seem adequate, as it is very easy to

Mr. Frank stated that a complaint ,t gard ng this situation has been
flidd with the Division of Highways and that: the:ma'tter .is being considered by
that body, It Was suggested that. the sign read., "'Right Lane 'for Petaluma. ,

Mrs. Nellie Schwartz, 1007 " Street, addressed the Council requesting
to know. the CounciPs intentions regarding improvement of "B" Street. She
believed that many of the property owners di not fully understand certain.
details of the project relative to curbs, etc,, and suggested that another survey
be made, to determine if `the majority of the property owners are now in favor
of haying the work. done
'Following discussf n, it was the decision of the Council take this
matter render consideration during budget sessions for fiscal. year 1957m58.
