City Attorney Klose
REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION
Introduce for later
Adoption of clarified Fire Code amendment.
RECOMMENDATION
Introduce for later
Adoption
4
BACKGROUND The 1979 Uniform Fire Code was adopted by the Council on 2/2/81. The
Fire Dept's application of the sprinkler amendment has been questioned. The Fire Dept.
treats all new additions to existing buildings as an expansion of the existing building
and uses the total square footage of the building in the application of required
sprinklers. The City Attorney feels that it is not clear in the Fire Code and should be
ALTERNATIVES defined in this new clarification of Section 10.309A Uniform Fire Code.
If left -as written, it will apply only to new buildings and/or additions of 8,000
square feet or more.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ACTING This could allow large buildings to be built in several
installments, each under 8,000 square feet. Existing non -conforming buildings (over
8,000 square feet) would be exempt from conformance when they increase their building
size (fire area) .
ACTION FOLLOWING ADOPTION
Enforcement of the sprinkler amendment in the U.F.C. in a manner that is comparable
to the guildelines in the Uniform Building Code.
