REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION:
Pass the attached Resolution to authorize the City Manager to sign an agreement for Explosive
Ordinance detail with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department.
RECOMMENDATION:
Pass the attached Resolution.
BACKGROUND:
The Petaluma Police Department lacks the expertise and equipment to deal with explosive
ordinances. Military responses are usually very slow and many times unavailable. It is in the
best interest of the City to have a bomb ordinance removal agreement with a Department that
has the expertise and equipment. Other Cities in the County have signed the same agreement
with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office.
ALTERNATIVES:
1. Train our people and buy equipment
2. Contract with some agency further away and have potential time delays.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ACTING:
Explosive ordinances inside the City will not be handled in a timely manner and may disrupt
citizens of Petaluma in and around the community.
ACTION FOLLOWING AUTHORIZATION:
The manager will sign agreement and forward to the Sheriff.
