HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 98-259 N.C.S. 12/07/1998 Resolution No. 9s-z59 N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California IN SUPPORT OF THE RETENTION OF THE TWO ROCK COAST GUARD TRAINING CENTER WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard is involved in aprocess to trim their budget through examination of potential excess training facilities; and, WHEREAS, the Two Rock Training Center near Petaluma, California has been identified for potential closing; and, WHEREAS, the Two Rock Training Center has served as an integral part of the Coast Guard organization for many years and has become a vital part of the local economic and social fabric of Sonoma County; and, WHEREAS, the members of the U.S. Coast Guard at Two Rock render assistance during local emergencies; and, the Two Rock facility provides large scale capability for the provision of emergency services in the event of a large scale disaster, such as it's medical, heliport and open space facilities for emergency temporary shelter; and, WHEREAS, the Training Center Fire Department provides extraordinary assistance in fire fighting through regional and state mutual aid response as evidenced during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the recent Oakland Hills fire which destroyed over 3,000 structures; and, WHEREAS, the Two Rock Training Center is the only Coast Guard Training Center on the West Coast and effectively trains members in a vast variety of technical skills; and, WHEREAS, the Two Rock Training Center is the only medical services site for retired military personnel within seventy miles of Sonoma County; and, WHEREAS, the loss of a twenty-six million dollar annual payroll and expenditure program would dramatically impact the local economy; and; WHEREAS, the loss of Coast Guard dependents would cause an estimated 70% reduction in enrollment in nearby Two Rock School, probably forcing its closure; and, Roolution No. 98-259 N.as. Page 1 of 2 WHEREAS, the Two Rock Training Center has served as a training site for 6,000 law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical students through Santa Rosa Junior College's on site training courses, in addition to the 200 National Guardsmen who train monthly at the facility. NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Petaluma, California, that it: 1. Expresses its concern over the potential closure of Two Rock training Center; and, 2. Urges that serious consideration be given to the fact that significant public funds have been expended on improvements to the Two Rock Center in recent years, which have resulted in the development of a modern, state of the art facility being used for the benefit of the Coast Guard organization and the local and regional community alike. Urzdet the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
