350 HOME AND GARDEN CHALLENGE WEEKEND - MAY 14 -15, 2011
WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma is concerned about the health and well -being of its
residents and seeks to create a healthy, sustainable, and livable community; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, all Sonoma County cities and the County adopted the boldest
community greenhouse gas emissions reduction target in the United States — 25% below 1990
levels by 2015; and
WHEREAS, last year, the first 350 Garden Challenge inspired thousands of people
across Sonoma County to take action and create 628 gardens, helping Sonoma County achieve
its climate goals by growing and eating fresh, local garden produce and creating energy and
water - efficient homes, businesses, and communities; and
WHEREAS, local governments greatly influence the opportunities for growing, eating,
and sharing healthy food through key powers over land and water use planning and policies,
economic and community development, parks and recreation, and other community services.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma,
along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby declare the weekend of
May 14 - 15, 2011 as the 350 Home and Garden Challenge Weekend and encourage all
residents to work together to make Sonoma County the healthiest county in the State of
California
