Public Comment
Vol. 42, Page 445
Katherine Rinehart, Heritage Homes, Petaluma, spoke of reasons why the City
needs a historic preservation planner. She thought it could be a part-time
contract position.
Diana Painter, Petaluma, spoke regarding the benefits to the City of a historic
preservation planner.
Marianne Hurley, Petaluma, Historic and Cultural and Preservation Committee,
spoke in favor of the City having a historical preservation planner. She said
that with the many historic areas in the City, consistency is needed in
planning. The City needs someone who can apply for funding for updating
design guidelines for historic districts, and an updated survey of historic
properties in the City. Both of these are very outdated.
Bill Wolpert, Petaluma, Historic and Cultural Preservation Committee, spoke
regarding the importance of preserving Petaluma's rich heritage. One of the
City's first activities as a Certified Local Government (CLG) would be to
update and expand the inventory of historic buildings. This and more should
be directed by a historica preservation planner.

Larry Reed, Petaluma, Site Plan and Architectural Review Committee (SPARC)
member, said that in -fill development "bumps up" against the City's significant
historic architectural resources. What's lacking is some real leadership from
the City on how to deal with these resources and make a plan.
Mayor Torliatt asked if there was consensus on the Council to ask the City
Manager to provide funding options for this position. Council agreed.
