HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamation 05/16/2011 (5)(Ettv of Petatuma vroctamation HARVEYMAKDAY- MAY22, 2011 WHEREAS, Harvey Milk made history as the first openly gay elected official in California, and one of the first in the nation, when he won election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in November 1977; and, WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's vision of the Castro neighborhood of the 1970's led him to found the Castro Valley Association which enabled the growing gay community to become politically organized and thereby gain support from unions and civic leaders; and WHEREAS, Harvey Milk's hard work and accomplishments on behalf of all San Franciscans earned him widespread respect and support; and, WHEREAS, the story of his incredible courage and vision has been well documented in such best selling literature as The Mayor of Castro Street, the documentary The Times of Harvey Milk, and the Oscar award winning movie MILK; and WHEREAS, after passing both the Assembly and the Senate, Senator Mark Leno's SB 572, declaring Harvey Milk's birthday on May 22nd an official statewide day of recognition, was finally signed into law on October 11, 2009, making Harvey Milk only the second person in our state's history, after conservationist John Muir, to gain such a designation and the only openly gay person in the country to receive this great honor; and WHEREAS, the holiday commemorating Harvey Milk's life provides an excellent forum to raise awareness of the importance of his life that continues to be an inspiration to all people committed to equal opportunity and an end to bigotry. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, David Glass, along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby honor the life and times of Harvey Milk and declare May 22, 2011 as Harvey Milk Day in Petaluma.
