REQUESTING TIIE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
TO CONSOLIDATE A SPECIAL MUNICH'AL ELECTION
TO REFER A CHARTER AMENDMENT ON CITY COUNCIL SALARY TO THE VOTERS
ON NOVEMBER 5, 1996,
WITH THE STATEWIDE GENERAL ELECTION
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Petaluma has called a Special Municipal Election to be
held on November 5, 1996, for the purpose of submitting a Charter amendment to the
voters; and,
WHEREAS, it is desirable that the -Special Municipal Election be consolidated with the Statewide
General Election to be held on the same date and that within the City the precincts,
polling places and election officers of the elections be the same, and that the Election
Department of the County of Sonoma canvass the returns of the Special Municipal
Election, and that the election be held in all respects as if there were only one election:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED; ORDERED, AND DECLARED AS FOLLOWS:
1. Pursuant to the Petaluma.City Charter and requirement Election Code Section 10403,
the Board of Supervisors of the County of Sonoma is hereby requested to consent and
agree to the consolidation of a Special Municipal Election with the Statewide Primary
election on Tuesday, November 5, 1996, for the purpose submittal of a Charter
amendment relating to City Council salary.
2. The measure is to read as follow:
Shall the voters of the City of Petaluma amend Charter
"Section 19 -Salaries" to read "The Council may act, by YES
ordinance, to provide compensation to each of its
members in an amount authorized by state law. The NO
Council may act, by ordinance, to provide compensation
to the Mayor in an amount up to 150 percent of the
compensation set for Council members." ? [which
currently would. allow up to $400 a month for Council

3. The Counry Election Department is authorized to canvass the returns of the Special
Municipal Election. The election shall be held in all respects as if there were only one
election, and only one form of ballot shall be used.
4. The Board of Supervisors is requested to issue instructions to the County Election
Department to take any and all steps necessary for the holding of the consolidated
election.
5. The City of Petaluma recognizes that additional costs may be incurred by the County
by reason of this consolidation and agrees to reimburse the County for such costs.
6. The County Election Department is requested to determine the cost of processing
Absentee Ballots for this election and is further requested to report said cost to the Ciry
Clerk of the City of Petaluma at the earliest possible time following the election.
7. The City Clerk shall file a certitied copy of this resolution with the Board of
Supervisors and with the County Election Department.
