AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER
TO ENTER INTO AGREEMENTS TO ACCEPT CONTRIBUTIONS
FROM THE PETALUMA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
AND DEVELOP AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN CONJUNCTION
WITH THE ADOBE CREEK RESTORATION DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

WHEREAS, the United Anglers, at Casa Grande High School have spearheaded efforts to

restore the habitat and fisheries in Adobe Creek and currently operate astate-of--the-art
fish hatchery which rears native steelhead trout from Adobe Creek.
WHEREAS elementary students from the Springhill Montessori School have also
adopted Adobe Creek and coordinate an annual Ecothon every May to re-plant native
plants vrd remove debris.
WHEREAS, students from Meadow School, Grant School, Petaluma Junior High Scl~~ooi
ahd others have participated in the effort to restore Adobe Creek through the Adopt-A-
Watershed Program.
WHEREAS the efforts of these local students and many other citizens has cultivated
community interest in watershed management and restoration activities.
WI-IEREAS, the City of Petaluma developed and adopted new "Restoration Design and
Management Guidelines" which define alternative channel design and management
methods that would enable restoration within flood control channels.
WHEREAS, a Restoration Plan and Management Program for Adobe Creek was prepared
in accordance with the recommendations in the Petaluma Marsh Enhancement Plan to
demonstrate the new design and management methods.

2 WHEREAS, there has been extensive community support and involvement for the
3 restoration project and additional grant funds and contributions have been secured for
4 implementation of the demonstration project.

6 WHEREAS, the Petaluma Educational Foundation has offered $12,000 in settlement
7 funds earmarked for restoration of Adobe Creek,
8
9 WHEREAS, the demonstration project for restoration of Adobe Creek provides an
l0 opportunity to integrate an educational program of stewardship with broader community
11 involvement.

]3 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Petaluma
14 hereby authorizes the City Manager to enter into an agreement with the Petaluma
15 Educational Foundation to accept and administer $12,000 in settlement funds towards the
t6 restoration of Adobe Creek. The City Manager is hereby authorized to enter into
t 7 professional services agreements to assist in the development of the program and oversee
18 implementation.
