RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AND SUPPORTING APPLICATION TO THE
SONOMA AGRICULTURAL PRESERVATION AND OPEN SPACE DISTRICT FOR
ACQUISITION OF OPEN SPACE PROPERTY
1 WHEREAS, the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District
2 (SCAPOSD) has established a competitive matching grant program for projects located within urban
3 areas; and

5 WHEREAS, the SCAPOSD has published guidelines and criteria for the 1996/97 round of this
6 grant progranr; and

8 WHEREAS, two areas have been identified by the City of Petaluma that not only meet the
9 SCAPOSD grant criteria but also have the following special characteristics:
10 • Will provide opportunity for public access to the river,
I 1 • Will provide awareness of natural or historic attributes unique to this region,
12 • Will provide an opportunity for beneficial reuse of treated wastewater,
13 • Are critical components in the successful implementation of the Enhancement Plan for the Petaluma
14 Marsh and Petaluma River Access and Enhancement Plan, and
15 • Will provide opportunities for flood plain preservation and non-structural flood control; and

17 WHEREAS, there is no local source of funding that could unilaterally support the acquisition of
18 these areas;

20 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Petaluma City Council hereby authorizes
21 application to the SCAPOSD for grant funding for acquisition of the areas generally described as
22 follows:
23 1. Designated flood plain areas along the Denman and Corona reaches of the Petaluma River

24 2. Approximately 150 acres of the Gray property lying adjacent to the Petaluma River between the City
25 Oxidation Ponds and Shollenberger Park;

27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council supports these applications and urges their
28 approval by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District.
