ARBORIST'S REVIEW OF REVISED ROAD .ALIGNMENT
June 18', 2004
In response to a request from the Planning Commission last week; the project engineers have completed
a feasibility study for a new alignment of,' Rovina Lane and play area location. The. purpose: of this effort
is to save some additional large oak trees, especially tree , #87, a 35" live oak. The plan °that ,was under
discussion •at that June 8th meeting - had already been revised significantly from the previous - submittal
to preserve several large specimen trees.
This review .will assess the probable impact of the revised alignment on the trees'to be ;preserved as
well as tangential issues relating to trees and landscaping on this site. Property lines home and
driveway aocations have all been scrutinized' and adjusted as well as road alignments to minimize impact
on trees., The following table will .iilustrate the - difference" between the two plans in terms of the; trees to
be retained or removed, listing their species, diameter and general condition..

Of the 25 trees that would be impacted by the new alignment, 10 ,trees would be preserved, and 15
removed. In the previous submittal, 1 5 would be pre'serve'd and 10-removed. More important than total
numbers is the concept of pr„eservin`g a grove of trees with root zones and crowns as undisturbed as
possible, which was the focus ,of the previous plan and alignment.
In the new alignment, tree: #81 the. 35" live oak which .is branched. to the. ground, would have to be
pruned extensively to raise the crown to accommodate equipment and traffic. Grading would occur
within 11' of the trunk which would impact the roosts significantly; (more than 6" of cut or fill will
kill roots). Tree #10`9`, a 23 valley oak, to ,be 'preserved in the shifted' alignment, has most of its
crown development on the'. sou
fh side due to competition with # 1: 1' 0. Much of the tree would have to be
pruned and removed to grade lot ;60. Tree' #1 10 is,.only in fair. condition', 'with extensive 'branch dieback
throughout its crown.
In the previous submittal, the individual; tree condition,, species, and 'potential impact were all
considered in the' process of site; plan development, as well as grove ,preservation. Wherever possible,
the most desirable species as well as the best specimens had been preserved. The play area had been
located near only one home, on a fairly level "area with a b "ck&gp of - the large trees in the riparian
zone, and good connection to the' public trail. New tree`s, including .so,me larger specimens would be
planted to providei shade within: a season for the active play areas:
In my opinion, the best tree groups and specimens would be preserved with the previous alignment of
Rovina Lane.
