Summary Statement
In recognition of the level of work and expertise performed by incubments, Human Resources recommends
that the City establish the classifications of Fire Inspector I & II to replace the existing Fire Inspector
classification. Human Resources reviewed and made minor revisions to the classification description of
Fire Marshal.
In recognition of the level of work and expertise performed by an incumbent, Human Resources
recommends that the City establish the classifications of Facilities Maintenance Worker I and Facilities
Maintenance Worker II to replace the existing Facilities Maintenance Worker classfication.

Resolutions Amending the Classification and Compensation
Plan and Establishing Classification Descriptions.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Fire Inspector I and II: At the request of the Fire Chief, Human Resources staff conducted a
classification review and study of the work performed by the two incumbents in the position of Fire
Inspector. Based upon that study, it is recommended that the classifications of Fire Inspector I and Fire
Inspector II be established and the existing Fire Inspector classification be abolished.
Fire Marshal: Human Resources staff reviewed the existing classification of Fire Marshal to ensure it
was accurate and up to date. The classification as proposed reflects minor revisions.
Facilities Maintenance Worker I and II: At the request of the Public Facilities and Services Director,
Human Resources staff conducted a classification review and study of the work being performed by an
incumbent in the position of Facilities Maintenance Worker. Based upon that study, it is recommended
that the classifications of Facilities Maintenance Worker I and II be established and the existing
Facilities Maintenance Worker classification be abolished.
• BACKGROUND
The City of Petaluma maintains a Classification and Compensation Plan in accordance with established
Personnel Rules. From time to time the Classification and Compensation Plan needs to be amended to
reflect changes in the work required and performed by employees.
3. ALTERNATIVES
Do not establish the classifications and pay ranges as proposed.
4. FINANCIAL IMPACTS
Increase in salary cost as a result of a new salary range for the position of Fire Inspector II.
Increase in salary cost as a result of a new salary range for the position of Facilities Maintenance
Worker II.
5. CONCLUSION:
The City needs to amend the Classification and Compensation Plan to ensure that the Plan remains up to
date and reflects change in the work required and performed by employees.

WHEREAS, the classification titles and specifications as adopted by Resolution
No. 90 -147 N.C.S., are hereby amended by establishing the classifications of Fire Inspector I,
Fire Inspector H, Fire Marshal, Facilities Maintenance Worker I and Facilities Maintenance
Worker II (as attached hereto and marked Attachment A); and
WHEREAS, the establishment of the pay ranges and unit assignments for the
classifications as listed below, are hereby amended by the corresponding Resolutions listed
below, effective the pay period following the adoption of this Resolution; and
WHEREAS, classification titles and specifications of Fire Inspector and Facilities
Maintenance Worker, adopted by Resolution No. 90 -147 N.C.S are abolished.

enforcement activities related to fire regulations and related codes and ordinances; performs a
variety of duties related to conducting fire safety education programs and fire inspections and
investigations, performs related work as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
With general supervision from the Fire Marshall, the Fire Inspector I performs varied facility
inspections to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes.
The Fire Inspector I is distinguished from a Fire Inspector II classification in that the Fire
Inspector I performs work with supervision and with less technical expertise and experience.
Decisions and determinations are made with the supervision of the Fire Marshal.
Incumbents in this classification are considered Peace Officers under Penal
Code section 830.37
(b) when acting in their capacity to enforce laws relating to fire prevention and fire investigation.

required. Issues corrective orders and citations.
Investigates complaints and compliance violations regarding fire hazards, hazardous material
problems, and related violations.
