TOM FURRER - "THE OLD BEAR " - RETIREMENT 2011
WHEREAS, Tom Furrer has been teaching wildlife biology at Petaluma's Casa Grande
High School for almost 30 years, encouraging, instructing, and occasionally growling at students
as he promoted the values and high standards in personal conduct and respect of others; and
WHEREAS, Tom first asked students for help in pulling debris from Adobe Creek, a
project that blossomed into building the school's Chinook salmon hatchery, involvement in creek
restoration, and the formation of the United Anglers; and
WHEREAS, Casa Grande students have won numerous state, national and international
awards under his leadership for bringing steelhead trout back to the once -dry Adobe Creek and
for their work on restoring and maintaining Adobe Creek; and
WHEREAS, Tom's vision and leadership in the creek and hatchery project have
produced amazing results not only for the region's fishery resources but for students alike,
exemplifying what public education can do to motivate and encourage our youth; and
WHEREAS, Tom Furrer has worked tirelessly to advance a mission that received
encouragement from Peter Pfendler, Jeannie Schulz, and Jane Goodall, to name a few; and
WHEREAS, Tom has spent thirty years devoting his life and skills to students at Casa
Grande, and for the past decade junior anglers in the elementary schools. Through this endeavor
he has instilled an appreciation of the environment, and particularly the importance of protecting
species that are endangered, to multiple generations of Petaluma students.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, David Glass, Mayor of Petaluma,
along with the members of the Petaluma City Council, do hereby extend our best wishes to Tom
Furrer on his retirement, and thank him for his years of dedication to the youth of Petaluma and
the legacy he has left behind for all Petalumans to enjoy for many years to come.
