Background

The south wall of the rear garage extends. out beyond both the east and west walls of the southern,structure. To the west stands a
solid masonry wall with a stepped parapet. To' the°east a mission the clad canopy,protects`over ,A wide metal roll -up door with a
narrow hollow -core metal door thaYwas'insertecl in 2001.
The east elevation visually°combines the,shorter°wallof the front structure with the taller wall of the rear garage. At the south end
two large modern aluminum -framed fixed ,windows' with concrete,sills penetrate the' masonry wall. Three original sixteen -lite
combination fixed and hopper steel -framed windows^punctuate the south end of theI=original showroom'elevation. The rear garage
wall, which stands approximately ten feet east,of'the showroom walll,i extends south and steps. down`in height to match the lower
elevation. The east garage elevation features nine original fixed steel windows in.good condition:
The west elevation differs slightly from the east as;ii addresses the:presence'of neighboring buildings. The .showroom elevation
features two central window openings:.. An original sixteen-litescombinationfixed .and"hopper steel window.occupies the northern

The simple north elevation features?a monotone painted;concrete masonry:unit wall. Three sixteen-lite�steei-frame fixed windows
and one sixteen -lite combinatiomiixed and hopper window pierce the;faiiade,withjwooneither side of;acentral roll up metal
door. A narrow hollow -core metal_ door; inserted in 2001, stands within the.large garage door. A concrete,drive ramps up to the
central opening from the streetleveT.

elements. The `features that lend,to the,architectural s yl' s, the glass block windows and metal accents
at the entry, the smooth exterior finishes and',the painted horizontal bands that wrap, the. corners.
The interior of the building is separated into two distinct portions:. The front structure, once the auto showroom, now serves as.the
Petaluma Adult School,and features many modern non=contributing: finishes including,icarpet flooring, a spray -on acoustical
ceiling treatment, ceiling mounted fluorescei%lights and ceiling fans, and'a wood�wainscot:,A few original: interior features
remain. At the north end two semi circular walls fram'ea central hallway with.a tinted scored concrete,floor. Ahalf-round picture
rail and chair rail frame several interior single lite wood frame fixed windowspiercing'the interiorpartition walls.
In 2001 alterations were;made•to the m' rth dividing�wall between the:northern and=southern; structures. Three windows were
removed and filled in with gypsum board clad wood frame walls. In addition a stew 36.inch fire' -rated door was installed within
the concrete masonry unit wall.to provide access, betweenthe two structures.

.square feet. The flat roof features anoverhang�ng ea.ve�on all sides. A,metal.,s tructure•previously,u`sed for'signage,framework
rernains,onthe south and east;sides, p"rolectingstseveral feet above th'e-roof plane. Stone masonry clads the walls and deteriorated
wood boards form'the.eave fascia. Two�concrete stairs with metal handrails stand' in front of each entrance:at,both the:north.and
south elevations. A. hollow -core: wood door; punctuates• the north wall on the west-end„and on the�south-elevation an aluminum -
framed sliding;glass door serves As,the,entry. Alurriinum sliding windows penetrate the walls on all elevations. An air-
conditioning unit hangs on the sodih wall below west -side of the window'.
Three Partition wallsubdivide the interiori-ito four rooms. Glue-u'p acoustic hies clad the ceiling and carpet covers the floor's

residential building with rear ancillary,structures�appears on the, 123; Petaluma Boulevard site on this same
Sanborn. map. The residence at 123 Petaluma Boulevard South remains visible on Sanborn maps dated
1906 and 1910, however, only one rear ancillary shed is shown; Themeighboring, structures on the block
are still extant on these twomaiwwer'reid
, nces. By 1923, Sanboin, maps show a gas station on
the 123 Petaluma Boulevard South lot and another station at the corner of ""Petaluma Boulevard South and
C Street. In this year, the'remainderof the block contains motorcycle repair shop and Chinese laundry in
