HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 94-111 05/02/1994Resolution No. 94-111 ~.C.s. of the City of Petaluma, California RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF PETALUMA IN .SUPPORT OF CONTINUED USE OF NATIONAL GUARD ARMORIES FOR HOMELESS ASSISTANCE AND DECLARING SUPPORT FOR SB 1691. 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 WHEREAS, the plight of homeless people seeking shelter during cold weather months continues; and WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma, its churches, nonprofit agencies and hundreds of caring volunteers have worked together, since 1988, to address the problem of providing shelter for this segment of the homeless population utilizing a variety of community facilities; and WHEREAS, the use of the National Guard Armory was made available in 1988 and has proven to be the most cost-effective and appropriate shelter, housing an average of 50-60 persons per night; and WHEREAS, the City of Petaluma, in coordination with a community based nonprofit agency, the Committee On The Shelterless and, in cooperation with the National Guard, has successfully operated the cold-weather armory program for homeless adults since 1989; and WHEREAS, the Governor has declared that the Armories will no longer be available for temporary emergency shelter after the 1994-95 program year; and WHEREAS, an exhaustive search for an alternative site has been underway since hearing about the Armory termination plans with no success; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Petaluma hereby encourages the State of California to continue as a partner in serving homeless adults and supports the legislation requiring continued use of the National Guard Armories for homeless aSSlStanCe. resoanny/bg16 Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
