HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2023-163 N.C.S. 10/16/2023 DocuSign Envelope ID:A4A2126B-5740-47A8-A07D-F87A60D370EA Resolution No. 2023-163 N.C.S. of the City of Petaluma, California RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PETALUMA SUPPORTING HUMAN RIGHTS OF ALL PETALUMANS AND CONDEMNING HATE SPEECH,RACISM, AND ACTS OF EXTREMISM WHEREAS, the City Council adopted Resolution 2017-032 N.C.S. on February 27, 2017 which states "to safeguard the equal and inalienable right and inherent dignity of all people that is the foundation of the relationship between a government and the people, the City Council of the City of Petaluma, on behalf of the entire Petaluma community, recognizes the rights, freedom, and dignity of all people are under threat and that children and families face potentially devastating and permanent harm;" and WHEREAS,the City Council adopted Resolution 2021-040 N.C.S. on April 5, 2021 in support of solidarity with the Asian American Pacific Islander communities and denouncing anti-Asian racism, discrimination, intimidation, threats, and violence; and WHEREAS, all forms of hate speech remain a serious and growing threat in the United States and around the world; and WHEREAS,according to the United Nations,hate speech is defined as"offensive discourse targeting a group or an individual based on inherent characteristics (such as race, religion or gender) and that may threaten social peace;" and WHEREAS, all forms of hate speech, including antisemitism, are toxic, divisive, and antithetical to the inclusive, welcoming community Petaluma aspires to be; and WHEREAS, White Supremist, antisemitic, and other hate-focused views are not normal, not welcome, and not tolerated in the Petaluma community. NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,by the City Council of the City of Petaluma as follows: 1. Reaffirms the City Council's support for human rights for all Petalumans. 2. Strongly condemns all forms of religious discrimination, including antisemitic and anti-Muslim comments, discrimination based on national origin, and racist, homophobic, transphobic, and ageist comments, which are not representative of the Petaluma community.
