The, City of Petaluma is located 45 miles north of San Francisco .on U-. S .

trict, encompassing a 73 square mile area . For many- years Petaluma
was a typ:ic6l quiet rural community with `a,very:avera;ge crime rate. In
19,61 our resid;entfall areas began to expand and the_"popul'ation. rose from
14,035 to the present.32,050. Current indications are. that. these trends
will continue for the next several years.
For many years .i ndustry within our . Ci`ty has 'l agged, far ,behind our. popu-

lat on growth and the vast majority 'of "our citizens are employed 'outside
the community. Consequently., Petaluma has be'come,a°'"bedroom=' type com-
muni ty, ;resulting i,n � a mni;mum. amount .of incoming' ta'x, revenue which i
necessary ' to , prov1de , the increased called for 'services..
With the large influx of population we have also experienced an! abnormal

complaints and reports have 'inc'reas"ed '91%.

to combate-.,ou.r ;increasing °crime:. Unfortunately;,howe,ver, our work oad
has not been,. reduced �signifkantl.y to.assign a, ful°lt me,, -departmental

4. Special interest group presentations to service organi'za.tons, P.T.A.'s,
merchants, and other organizations which will address the needs and
topic matter of .'operation I.D.., Neighborhood Alert and Free Home 'Se-
curity Inspections.
5. Daily burglary' vi ct,i'm follow-up in which the Petaluma P61 tce Officers
or the Crime Prevention Specialist wi11 inform burglary victims or

of our cleared burglaries..
