ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF WATER POLLUTION CONTROL
DEFINITION
Under general •direction, to assist in planning, org'aniz'ing, and
directing the operation 'and maintenance of the City's sewage
• treatment plant and related facilities, including performing
standard chemical and biological examinations of sewer, water, and
industrial °effluent waste;:. and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assists Director on general, management of the sewage treatment plant
and related facilities; assists in directing and training employees.;
performs a variety of standardized 'and complex chemical and bio-
logical an'a'lyses of sewage and water :samples; collects samples and
performs labora.torychecmial and bacteriological reference tests;
prepares solution's and reagents; assists: with effluent and Indus-
trial :waste inspection-and monitoring program; makes chemical tests
of City swim pool and reference analytical tests on filter backwash
for the Water Division; interprets- laboratory tests; assists in
preparing monthly and annual Regional Water- Resources Control Board
and °monthly City reports; maintains an inventory of required chemi-

DEFINITION.
Under general direction., to plan, organize and direct the operation
and: maintenance of the City's sewage treatment plant and related
• facilities•; serves as Industrial Waste Inspector; and to do related
work required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
•
Plans, directs and coordinates the operation and maintenance of the
sewage treatment plant and sewer lift, stations 'plans shift opera-
tions.to.meet required conditions and assigns regular. and special
duties to plant operating personnel ; instructs staff in proper
operating and maintenance methods;,, supervises and personally per-
forms a variety of routine and complex laboratory tests and analyses
on raw sewage and water; directs the City's effluent and -industrial
waste inspection and monitoring program supervises a preventative .
maintenance program for, the treatment plant And related facilities;
maintains 'inventory.of supplies, tools and equipment; writes speci-
fications for equipment replacement, prepares annual- budget estimates

operation and maintenance of the City's sewage treatment plant,
oxidation ponds and related facilities;. to make standard tests of
'sewage', water and industrial effluent and waste; and to do related
work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES.
Supervises, participates in and reviews a variety of duties related
to the sewage- treatment plant, oxidation ponds and related facilities;
• supervises the daily assignments and 'work loads of employees; enforces
safety precautions.; '.instru cts and trains employees; serves as plant
operator on a relief basis during emergencies and personnel shortages;
collects a variety of samples and performs laboratory chemical and
bacteriological reference_ tests and analyses of sewage, water and
industrial effluent and waste; maintains records, compiles data and
write, reports when needed, for example, on plant operations, water
flow, sludge transfer, sludge withdrawls, oxidation ponds and power
used; maintains performance records on equipment; assists in directing
' preventive maintenance and repair work; analyzes records and reports
