HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 91-003 N.C.S. 01/07/19911 JAN '7199 ReS®Iltt101~1 No. 91_3 N.C.~. of the City of Petaluma, California ~. 3 4 5 G 7 8 io 11 72 ].3 ~~ ~.s t~ ~~ 7.8 t~ ~o SUPPORTING LEGISLATION REQUIRING MANDATORY HELMET USAGE FOR ALL AGES OF MOTORCYCLE RIDERS WHEREAS, Unhelmeted motorcycle riders are likely to incur fatal injuries resulting from traffic accidents; and, WHEREAS, A recent University of Southern California study of 900 motorcycle accidents concluded that safety helmet use was the single most important factor governing survival; and WHEREAS, Head injuries are the leading cause of death from motorcycle crashes; and, WHEREAS, Motorcycle crashes result in 13 % of all motor-vehicle deaths; and, WHEREAS, It has been estimated that the potential cost to the public in Southern California alone may be as much as $100,000,000 to cover medical expenses for brain. injured cyclists. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Petaluma City Council as follows: L Urges the State Legislators to support Assembly Bill 7 as introduced by Assemblyman Richard Floyd; and, 2. Reaffirms the support of the City of Petaluma for mandatory helmet usage for all ages of motorcycle operators and passengers on California public streets and roadways. Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
