RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 22, 1990
EARTH I~AY
WI~EREAS, almost twenty years ago, more than twenty million Americans joined
together on Earth Day in a demonstration of concern for the environment creating an
informed public whose collective action resulted in the passage of sweeping new laws to
protect our air, water, and land;
W>FIEREAS, in the nineteen years since the first Earth Day, despite
environmental improvements, the environmental health of the planet is increasingly
endangered, threatened by Global Climate Change, Ozone Depletion, Tropical
Deforestation, Ocean Pollution, Toxic Wastes, Desertification, and Nuclear Waste
requiring action by all sectors of society;
`A/IIEREAS, Earth Day 1990 is a national and international call to action for all
citizens to join in a global effort to save the planet;
~IHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and eventswill educate all citizens on the
importance of acting in an environmentally sensitive fashion by recycling, conserving
energy and water, using efficient transportation, and adopting a more ecologically sound
lifestyle;
WhIEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the
importance of buying and using only those products least harmful to the environment;
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will. educate all citizens on the
importance of doing business only with those companies that are environmentally
sensitive and responsible;

WI-IEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the
importance of voting for those candidates who demonstrate an abiding concern for the
environment;
VFTPIEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the
importance of supporting the passage of legislation that will help protect the
environment;
WPIEREAS, the City of Petaluma is authorized to contribute $500 toward the
activities and events of Earth Day 1990
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Petaluma City Council
designates and proclaims Apri122, 1990 as Earth Day 1990, and that that day shall be set
aside for public activities
Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.
