The strength of our local economy and the EMPLOYMENT 8 TRAINING DIVISION lery Dunn,Director collaborative efforts of all of our partners is,reflected in the-significant reduction (707)565-5550 in the number of families.receiving cash aid. More importantly, the dramatic (707)365-5555 Fax increase in connection to the labor force among those who..have left the rolls as FAMILY,YOUTH L'CHILDREN S DIVISION well as those receiving supplemental aid is•e ncouraging. Carol Sauer.Director . (707)565-439.0 However, by complete. Significant • (707)565-4399,Faz , our '-task is b no means com lete. Si nificant issues remain to be addressed, including the need for affordable housing, transportation and childcare. While our long-term goal is full self-sufficiency for families, the economic reality is that more support is needed for low income working 'families. Continuing Medi-Cal, Food Stamps and childcare subsidies are helping families make the transition from welfare to work. We are making every effort to insure that all families who qualify continue to receive these benefits. A study underway by the Sphere Institute will provide us with more information to determine how those families who have left•assistance=are faring. It will also give us increased information on those families who are subject-fo reductions in aid (sanctions) for non-participation. With TANF•reauthorization by Congress just around the corner, maintenance of federal and state fundingilevels so that we can stay the course is critical. I look forward to working with you toward that end. Sincerely, • dP tL -t. t Dianne M. Edwards Director • Enclosure P.O.
