AMENDING THE CLASSIFICATION PLAN BY REVISING THE
CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATIONS FOR FIREFIGHTER,
FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC, FIRE ENGINEER, AND FIRE CAPTAIN
WHEREAS, the City wishes to keep current its Classification and Compensation Plan;
and amendments and/or revision to the Classification and Compensation Plan are effective upon
approval by the City Council: and,
WHEREAS, the City Manager/Personnel Officer has determined that certain duties and
responsibilities are appropriately allocated to the classifications of Firefighter,
Firefighter/Paramedic, Fire Engineer, and Fire Captain (as attached hereto and marked Exhibits
A, B, C and D); and,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Petaluma:
I. Approves the amendments to the Classification and Compensation Plan as written
in this Resolution including the amendment in the Competitive Service of the
Personnel System; and,
2. Takes this action pursuant to Personnel Code 3.04.020 and Personnel Rules and
Regulations (Rule IV- Classification and Rule V— Compensation) and that notice
of this action has been properly posted.
Under the power and authority conferred upon this Council by the Charter of said City.

Summary

Duties:
In a fire emergency, connect supply lines; control and extinguish fires, using various size hand-
lines, deck ladders and portable water monitors; connect foam educators and apply foam and

specialized power and hand tools; use various hand and power tools to obtain entry to
buildings, free trapped accident victims and provide ventilation.
Provide emergency medical care at the basic life support level, including initial patient and
situation assessment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and trauma emergency medical care.
Prepare patients and assist Firefighter/Paramedics in advanced life support emergency medical
care.
Participate in specialized rescue operations including: aerial, water, underground and confined
space situations, including the use of rigging and shoring.
Contain, control, and decontaminate hazardous materials spills.
Participate in clean-up, salvage, overhaul operations; clean, service, and ensure operational

the time of application.
Must possess current certification as an Emergency Medical Technician/Level IA.
Must be.Acting Fire Captain certified by the Petaluma Fire Department at the time of
application.
Must pass and maintain physical requirements as specified by the City and be able to wear self-
contained breathing apparatus.
Must be willing to work shifts as structured in the Fire Department.
Equivalent to certification as a Firefighter I.
At least one year of experience at the Fire Engineer level and State fire officer certification are
