Mayor E. Clark Thompson •
PO Box 61 .
Petaluma, CA 94953-0061 .
Dear Mayor Thompson: •
In October of 2000, the mayorof Austin, Texas, proclaimed Saturday; October 28, "Austin Day." No,
this was not a celebration of the city of Austin but instead for Golden Retriever-Austin who had taken
first place in the search and rescue categoryrof The American Kennel Club Awards for Canine
Excellence (ACE).
In attendance at the awards ceremony, held at a local dog show in Texas, were representatives from
0 The American Kennel Club (AKC), Austin and his handler, Officer Jim Minton, Mayor Kirk Watson,
Police Chief Stan.Knee, Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros,.CommenderJoe Putnam, a delighted
audience of local people and, of course, numerous media representatives who reported on the event.
The story and photographs of the ceremony were also carried onAKC's.Web site (www.akc:org) which
gets approximately 800,000 visitors permonth.
On behalf of the AKC, I would like to invite you and your staff, your police and fire departments, animal
hospitals, veterinarians, and anyone in the general population of your city to participate in this new
initiative, which is designed to bring the public's'attention to the all too many unsung canine heroes
. throughout the United States that play such a vital.role.in our lives: As you will see on the enclosed
flier, the nomination process for the ACE Awards is simple, anyone can nominate a dog, and every
nominated dog will receive an AKC Certificate of Recognition. Please feel free to distribute copies of
the flier and/or to spread the word as you see fit.
If you have any questions, I would be happy to be of assistance. You may contact meat the e-mail
address, or phone and fax numbers that are shown above. I look forward to receiving many
nominations from your constituents for The American Kennel Club Awards for Canine Excellence
(ACE) 2001 and hope to be celebrating a canine victory with you this year.
Sincerely;
