RE: SUPPORT FOR U. S. GEOLOGICAL!SURVEY WATERSHED MONITORLNG AND
GROUNDWATER RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Dear Representative oolsey.; / _
•
q y support to maintain or increase funding for the U. S.
We are writing to request' our, achve su
Geological Survey(USGS) tnthe Fiscal Year 2001-2002-federal budget. We understand that the
President's budget has targeted<the'USGS and other programs for reduced finding in the year
ahead. We feel strongly that the valuable, basic.research provided by the USGS in our region
' should'be maintained and, if possible, expanded.
Staff from the Sonoma County Water Agency"are working:closely with professionals from the
USGS on several verrimportant;:projects. First,:USGS staff conducting basic watershed •
• monitoring research in the Russian River watershed. The'worlc.provides data to evaluate the
health of the waterslied, and"tosaddress fishery-restoration andhWater supply needs. USGS stream
flow and water quality data.are also used to,track!minimum flow requirements in the Russian
River and,are essential to our flood forecasting and.emergency services-work. Second, the USGS
is•iniiiating new reseatcn on the occurrence and distribution.of'ground water resources in
' Sonoma County, and studies on the interaction between surface'water°and-ground water systems:
Ground water occurrence and quality are not welhunderstood in ihisnegion, and'the.US GS'studies
will help *Vide a:basis in fact regarding an important natural resource.
Thank you,for your consideration of this request. If you have questions or require further
information please contact us:

Sincerely,
