Good Luck ! I am writing in support of the Salvation Army' s right to develop and utilize their .property at the McDowell Blvd. location . Yes , I understand that the neighbors are nervous that their "tranquility" will be violated. I am not an expert on the Salvation Army, but having had some " association with them, I believe that if any organization - government or private -- can efficiently run an operation and do so with limited funding, they can do it! They help the less fortunate with little regard for their own ,financial reward or public recognition. They see a need and they respond to that need. They do ,not lavish themselves with salaries approaching six-figures, or surround themselves with high-end furniture , or clink wine glasses with high-profile do gooders , whose main interest is to couch themselves in a lucrative' and cozy environment, and pretend that they are helping the down trodden. Neighbors , don ' t' condemn these wonderful -soldiers of the Salvation Army. They are helping people that could be your children or grandchildren. YOU yourselves did not make it through life on your own.. Someone , somewhere„ at some point in your, life helped you the teacher that took the time to ensure that you understood the lesson ; the employer that hired YOU and not another applicant; the lender that gave YOU a mortgage ; the doctor that healed YOUR ailment; the clergy that: helped YOU ,. spiritually; YOU might even be liVing in a subsidized home ; or . drawing social security or SSI ; the list goes on . . . . Look upon your ne.w neighbor, the Salvation Army, as providing you an opportunity to be a good citizen. Volunteer your services with them. All you will have to do is cross the street to lend a helping hand to a fellow human being. Remember. There , but for the grace of God, go YOU. Our home is on Crinella Drive and Caulfied;Lane. There is a crossing guard at the corner and students from both La Tercera Elementary School and)Casa'Grande High School walk,in front of our house-on school days. OnrFriday and Saturday nights we listen to the'squeeling tires of cars speeding up and•down Caulfied Seriously, I cringe when I hear them gunning their motors: During school breaks we really get subjected to more of this and I am always thinking about who is driving and who is in-the crosswalk. Its a very busy„and possible dangerous'intersection. I am not opposed'to the good'work that the Salvation Army does for the needy I have made numerous donations in support of.'their efforts, however, lamboncerned about the added traffic. In addition, I have personal experience with a COTS trailer parked.in the St James's Catholic Church, parking lot which was dedicated to the COTS program and other homeless people We would:collec_t:` donations and pass them on This is a noble cause indeed but the trash piled up around the trailer from, donations dropped off after-business hours This became an eye sore and eventual dump site It also became a hang out by the'homeless. Again; I cringe at what could happen if this project became unattended I also would li Je to protect my children from strangers just"hanging out” our area project Please.do not allow this roject to continue Barbara Thornton 762-1458 (one of the signatures on the petition) • 3/27/01
