CL PETALUMA'S WATER RECYCLING FACILITY PROGRESS REPORT • One of the alternatives for Petaluma's new Water Recycling Facility (WRF) would provide more recreational opportunities:;for those who now enjoy Shollenberger Park. As a Petaluma citizen you have an opportunity to voice your opinion as the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is about to start and the city is looking for your perspective (see WHAT CAN I DO, below). The charts to the left show you the alternative site plans, and artist's rendering of how the new wetlands would appear. The wetlands pictured in alternative "A" would be adjacent to Lakeville Highway and on the property that lies southeast of Shollenberger between the park and existing treatment ponds The ponds are on the other side of the long row of eucalyptus and blue gum trees you can see to the southeast. The engineers have determined that there must be a method of Algae Removal, to meet future discharge and reuse requirements. There are two options being examined for algae removal: A. Wetlands — they can be designed to remove algae in conjunction with dense vegetation. Additional benefits would be environmental enhancement and public access, a trail system linking the new ponds to Shollenberger, and outlook areas. Increased parking could be included, and educational opportunities based upon the recommendations of the project team. The wetlands pictured would' occupy 70 acres, and require the city to purchase the property between the park and the existing treatment facility. B. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) — a DAF "thickener" could be used as an alternative to the above, removing algae mechanically, with chemicals added to enhance performance. These thickeners would be located on the existing Lakeville plant site. Additional property would not need to be purchased. The new WRF project cost is estimated at $81.3 million with DAF and $90.7 million with wetlands. Annual operation costs under DAF would be $3.6 million. The annual cost under the wetlands alternative would up be less, at $3.1 million. As shown in the time chart, projected completion is estimated to be in 2006. WHAT CAN I DO? Learn More About this Important Project: • Copies of the Initial Study and Water Recycling Facility Project Reportare available for review at the City Hall, Dept. Of Water Resources, or Reference desk at the Public Library. An open meeting will be held to discuss the project on June 19th at the Petaluma Community Center, 320 N. McDowell at 7 PM. He also has email at mban(cr.ci.petaluma.ca.us Why should I act now? o The project team is looking for ideas/comments from the Public NOW before they start the Environmental Impact Study. That will start after the public input (above), and Is expected to.be-completed by early next year. This summary is based upon my understanding of the WRF project. Presented posthumously, the Special Pioneer • Award recognizes Shainsky's vision and his commitment to excellence in business and animal husbandry. He and his colleagues at Petaluma Poultry crafted many of the first organic standards for poultry and meat production, bringing livestock into the organic movement. Shainsky was born in Sonoma in 1931 and began working on his family's farm at age six. Founder, in 1969, of Petaluma Poultry Processors, he developed.a.protocol for raising chickens that have old fashioned flavor, and he lobbied tirelessly for poultry products in the natural foods industry and won the right to label his chickens as "antibiotic-free" and "free range". His perseverance was further rewarded in 1998 with the adoption of national standards for organic meat and poultry. In 1999 Petaluma Poultry was the first chicken producer in the United States to receive USDA approval for an organic, label. Rosie the Organic Chicken, Rocky the Range Chicken and Rocky, Jr. have become standards for the highestquality in the poultry business.
